Local, state, and federal Alerting Authorities can send emergency alerts to the public through the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS).

IPAWS is overseen by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission.

The alerting systems within IPAWS include:

  • Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs)
  • Emergency Alert System (EAS)

WEAs are designed to warn the public through loud, text-like alerts on mobile devices about:

  • Dangerous weather
  • Missing children
  • Other critical situations

The EAS broadcasts emergency information through radio and television.

Alerting Authorities may occasionally conduct tests of these emergency alert systems. For WEA tests, authorities will provide advance notice to the public.
